How to Create An Attractive Job Posting

In today’s tight labor market attracting applicants to your open positions can be difficult without an effective job posting. Luckily, there are strategies to help your messages stand out from your competitors. In addition, a recent survey shows that the most popular way to attract good applicants is by advertising job openings to your current network of customers and employees’ friends. In fact, 59% of job searchers say they rely on word of mouth and referrals, while 42% say they simply walk into the businesses they’re interested in.

So how do you get the right message in front of these people? Taking the time to craft “we’re hiring” materials to put on social media, print out, and pass along to your employees is the most effective way. As part of these materials, you can include the availability needed and any skill requirements, information that may not be repeated to friends or walk-ins.

ELEMENTS OF AN EFFECTIVE JOB POSTING

Now Hiring Language

This may seem obvious, but it’s crucial! Letting people know that you’re hiring and for how long is important to include. Additionally, letting people know what positions are open and if any experience is required helps bring in more qualified applicants.

Common phrases include “Help Wanted” and “Now Hiring”, but consider using inclusive language like “Join Our Team”. Using inclusive language helps potential applicants see themselves as part of your team and feel welcomed.

Bright Colors, Simple Fonts

Whether someone is scrolling on their newsfeed or passing by your store, bright colors and easy to read text is the way to go. Make sure the fonts you use are large enough to read and any images don’t become blurry if you are scaling your design.

Company Logo

Including your company logo on materials is important to reinforce messaging. But, many franchises have marketing material rules about which color logo to use on certain background colors. Be sure to consult your marketing guide before posting or printing!

Why to Apply

It’s best to keep signs and posts short and concise, but adding a line or two about why people should apply is impactful. If you’re a restaurant, consider mentioning if free food is a perk. Looking for employees at your gym? Let them know if they get a free membership!

How to Apply

Last but not least, be sure to include instructions on how to apply. Be sure to include information on times a manager may be available for walk-ins. Or, include the application website for people to apply online.
